Our first getaway with Toto! We made our way to Belfair State Park, which lies at the bitter end of the Hood Canal — just a 45-minute drive from our place.
We had gone for a stroll with the boys at this park the previous summer, just to check it out, and to fill the time while we were waiting for Toto to be hatched. It looked good to us!
This time of year you can’t reserve campsites at most Washington State Parks, including this one — you just show up and hope you find something you like. All the pull-through sites were taken, so we had to back in… good practice but we had wanted to keep this first outing as simple as possible. Oh well, we found a site, I backed in in only 1.5 tries, and we didn’t hit or run over anything.
Even though Wally made it very, very difficult.
Wally, never exactly calm in the car, starts screaming like an excited chimpanzee whenever the car slows down. He suspects, we think, that he’ll be getting out of the car soon, and that he’ll either get to go for a walk or will be turned over to the evil people at the veterinarian’s office. Either way, he shrieks.
We drove around the campground loop twice, trying to pick out the best available site. Wally, whose travel bed is right behind my ears in the truck, told us his said tale, at alarming volume levels. This made our discussion about campsites, and my nervous maneuvering, nerve-wracking.
Once we chose the site and began THAT maneuvering, he cranked it up a few notches. Ugh.
So. I asked Sooz to get out of the truck and take Wally with her.
She ended up taking both dogs. The site was pretty wide open, so there was no need for her to do any spotting or guiding. Good thing, too — the dogs immediately decided to do their afternoon business and she was kept busy cleaning up after them.
When the three of them looked up… Toto and TinMan were parked. Hurrah! Miracle. And only minutes later, we were relaxing with a view of the canal.
We liked this park enough to want to come back in the warmer weather, and bring a kayak or two — especially if we could snag a waterfront site. So I kept an eye on the calendar and we have a waterfront (pull-through!) site reserved for a few days in August.
I am told that it gets pretty lively there in summer… noisy powerboats, noisy canine and humanoid creatures. Maybe we’ll take earplugs.
